ABOUT SCALED

 

SCALED is a wearable technology company developing custom-fit wearables for athletes to minimize the risks of harmful long-term damage from joint injuries. SCALED can be used for leveraging injury prevention, rehabilitation and sports performance enhancement through regulated motion control.

SCALED was founded in 2020 by design-engineer Natalie Kerres. Her multi-disciplinary team of experts supporting the project extends across med-tech, additive manufacturing, physiotherapists and athletes.

OUR MOTIVATION

In 2018 the UK Government outlined a new mission:

“To ensure that people can enjoy at least 5 extra healthy, independent years of life by 2035, while narrowing the gap between the experience of the richest and poorest.”

Sustaining physical activity is a crucial part of this plan to age healthily. Our mission, vision and philosophy stem from the shared belief that by protecting and preventing injuries, we can enable a healthier society to age actively and independently.

OUR STORY

SCALED is a material innovation company. SCALED aims to protect the superhumans of tomorrow by preventing injuries today.  The company was founded in 2020 by design-engineer Natalie Kerres. 

Natalie champions the benefits of an active lifestyle, but after both her and her mother suffered from joint injuries, she realised the damaging long-term impact these injuries can have on the body. Her mother’s injuries healed differently to hers due to difference in age and lifestyle. However, for both her and her mother, there was some mobility that would simply never be regained. After trying to wear protective materials to prevent further damage, she realised that current solutions can’t protect without limiting her athletic performance.

Her challenge: how could she engineer a solution that not only protected her joints from injury, but prevented these injuries from happening in the first place – and all without limiting mobility? How could this benefit people who put their bodies into extreme danger every day?

Many animals in nature are faced with a similar problem. Evolution has created scales which are tailored to the animal's challenges; protecting them from harmful threats.  Inspired by nature’s ingenious answer to this problem - SCALED was born. Through rigorous research, prototyping and product development, SCALED is now disrupting the market of wearable technology for injury prevention.
